Southern Lombok Tours
Southern Lombok Tours take in an amazing cross-section of Lombok life,
such as traditional Sasak Villages, textile weaving villages, traditional
Lombok pottery, wonderful beaches, stunning bays where you can easily
snorkel coral reefs right off the beach and so much more!
Sukarara Village
Sukarara Village is a traditional Sasak Village, where the inhabitants live the
very traditional lifestyle.
The houses and buildings use no modern materials, and are constructed
entirely of natural products such as giant bamboo, palm leaves (which make
up the roofs and the walls), local clay mixed with cattle dung for the floors
and any steps etc.
The Sasak people adhere to age-old customs and guard their heritage to
ensure it lives on for generations to come.
Sade Village
Sade Village is another well known Sasak Village, which has a reputation for
the quality of traditional textiles that are manufactured there.
Women weave these textiles using the “back strap” method, where the
weaver actually sits inside the weaving loom, using the pressure of their
back to adjust the tension of the material being woven.
There are no patterns to copy either… the pattern is passed down from
mother to daughter, and each family has its own pattern which can go back
to the original Sasak inhabitants of Lombok.
Pottery Villages
Lombok pottery is sought after right around the world. These incredibly
beautiful pieces are made entirely by hand using a very unique method.
There is no spinning ‘potters wheel’… the raw clay is formed into the shape
of the finished product by gradually “pinching” small pieces of clay to the
layer below until the final shape is achieved.
Due to the clay being fired in natural wood kilns, every piece is different,
with different colours and shades, and even surface textures.
If you are seeking that special piece for your home, a visit to a Lombok
pottery village is a must.
The manufacturers will happily pack and ship your purchase anywhere
world-wide.
Batik Art Gallery
Batik Art is a staple of traditional arts and crafts on Lombok. Created using
the “dye exclusion method”, where hot wax is very carefully placed on raw
cloth, causing any dye that is applied to the cloth to stain all of the cloth,
except where the wax has been placed, allows the artist to create very
intricate and wonderfully diverse pieces of art.
This form or art is extremely time consuming and a single piece may require
up to 8 different wax and dye applications to achieve the desired result.
These wonderful pieces are highly sought after.
Southern Beaches
The beaches located along the southern coast of Lombok are dotted with
small traditional fishing villages.
The sand on the beaches is produced by tiny pieces of dead coral washing up
onto the shore, meaning that the sand is often brilliant white.
At Kuta Lombok, due to the action of the waves, the tiny pieces of coral have
been worn into the shape of tiny balls, so when walking on the beach you
have a sense of sinking with each step.
With many protected bays to choose, from, most are ideal for swimming, or
snorkelling the coral reefs which lay just off the beach.
The southern beaches of Lombok are without doubt some of the most
beautiful beaches in the world, with most having palm trees dotted along
the shore to offer protection from the sun.
In some locations there are small palm leaf roof shelters where drinks are
served, and almost every beach has at least one traditional restaurant set
on the edge of the beach where you may try the many and varied delights of
Indonesian traditional foods.
